Course overview
Our first aid course is the Canadian Red Cross Intermediate First Aid program with CPR Level C and AED, taught over two days in our Grande Prairie classroom. Intermediate First Aid is the course that used to be called Standard First Aid, and it is the level most Alberta worksites, employers and operators mean when they say "first aid ticket". Alberta names its workplace first aid levels Basic, Intermediate and Advanced; we teach Intermediate, plus the one-day recertification. CPR Level C covers adults, children and infants, and it is the CPR level most employers ask for.
Most people in our classroom are here because a job, an employer or a site sent them. Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety Code, Part 11, makes the prime contractor, or the employer where there is no prime contractor, responsible for having trained first aiders on the worksite. Plenty of people take the course for other reasons too: childcare and daycare work, coaching, teaching, personal training, driving, volunteering, or simply wanting to know what to do at home or on the highway. The course and the certificate are the same either way.
The course runs every week on Tuesday and Wednesday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm both days. Day 2 is always the Wednesday straight after Day 1, so you book once and come both days. It is hands on: you practise every skill in our classroom, on the floor and on mannequins, not just on paper, so you leave able to use what you learned. The course follows the Canadian Red Cross Intermediate First Aid outline:
- Preparing to respond: your role, your safety, and how the emergency medical system works
- Check, Call, Care: checking the scene and the casualty, and when and how to call for help
- Airway emergencies, including choking in adults, children and infants
- Breathing and circulation emergencies, including heart attack and angina
- CPR Level C and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) on adults, children and infants
- Wound care: bleeding, shock, and dressing and bandaging
- Head and spine injuries
- Bone, muscle and joint injuries, including splinting
- Sudden medical emergencies such as stroke, seizures, diabetic emergencies and severe allergic reactions
- Environmental emergencies: cold and heat exposure
- Poisons
Each topic is taught, shown, and then practised until you can do it. The course ends with the Red Cross skills and knowledge check, and when you pass you receive a Canadian Red Cross certificate in Intermediate First Aid, CPR Level C and AED, valid for up to three years.

Frequently asked questions
Intermediate First Aid, which used to be called Standard First Aid, with CPR Level C and AED. CPR Level C covers adults, children and infants. You receive a Canadian Red Cross certificate for all three.
Anyone a worksite, employer or site has asked for a first aid ticket. Under Alberta's OHS Code, Part 11, the prime contractor or employer must have trained first aiders on site, and how many depends on the number of workers on the shift and how far the site is from a hospital. Intermediate First Aid is the level most Alberta worksites ask for. If you are not sure which level you need, check with whoever is asking for it, or call us and we will help you confirm it.
Anyone. Most people in our classes are sent by a worksite or an employer, but parents, coaches, drivers, people who work with the public, and anyone who wants the training can book a seat the same way.
$190 per seat plus GST for the two-day course. Recertification is also $190 plus GST. You pay when you arrive on Day 1, by cash or e-transfer. There is nothing to pay online when you book, and companies can be invoiced.
Two days, Tuesday and Wednesday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Recertification is one day, on a Tuesday.

Workplace first aid certificates in Alberta are valid for up to three years. You can recertify in one day before it expires. After it expires you take the full course again.
Intermediate First Aid is the level most Alberta worksites, employers and operators ask for. Your site or employer decides what they require, so check with them, and call us if you want help confirming it.
No. Once a certificate has expired you take the full two-day course again. If it is still valid on the day of the class, you can recertify.
Class starts at 8:00 am. You will be on the floor practising CPR and working through scenarios on mannequins. There is a lunch break around midday, and the day finishes at 4:00 pm. We provide everything you practise with and the course materials.
Government-issued photo ID and comfortable clothing you can move in. We supply everything else.
